Miami, FL-Since the DSe Hybrid 12m was introduced and launched last fall by Island Pilot, media attention has continued to gravitate to the innovative hybrid yacht. In response to a consumer-driven, yet selective leisure market, Reuben Trane and his team at Island Pilot have tailored the new DSe and her future sisterships to meet the expectations of the active, budget-conscious, and carbon footprint-aware buyer. If you have not yet had a chance to experience the new DSe, built in Zhuhai City, China, for yourself, recent awards bestowed on the vessel are sure to motivate you to get to know America’s first hybrid pleasure cruising vessel that combines diesel, solar, and electric technologies.

The February 2009 issue of MotorBoating recognized the DSe Hybrid as “Best of the Year,” an award the 102-year-old magazine has been issuing for 10 years. Editor Peter Janssen shares that the judges “were blown away by the creativity that Reuben built into the Dse, the entire package. Obviously the idea of leaving zero carbon footprint is incredible; a high bar to beat. The entire design of the boat with the solar panels on top, the slippery hull beneath, the marriage to the Steyr diesels; it’s a boat in its own category when you consider the entire thing-simply a major breakthrough.”

Power and Motoryacht’s January 2009 issue features the DSe Hybrid on the cover showing the full array of Photo Voltaic solar panels. The inside story highlights the many efficient propulsion characteristics of the DSe as well as the comfortable, liveaboard layout. Detailed performance charts and graphs in Capt. Bill Pike’s article illustrate the impressive fuel burn, range, and sound levels measured on his sea trial.

The DSe Hybrid also graced the cover of PassageMaker Magazine’s March 2009 issue and the article details the technical components that make the boat a green success as well as one with appeal to eco-savvy cruising couples.

With all the media coverage the DSe Hybrid has enjoyed, it is no surprise that she received the Environmental Award during the Miami International Boat Show’s Innovation Awards presentation. The Innovation Awards, organized by the NMMA and judged by Boating Writers International, recognize products that best meet the following criteria: Innovative distinction from other products currently being manufactured; benefit to the marine industry and/or consumer; practicality; cost-effectiveness; and availability to the consumer within 60 days of award receipt.

Judging was done by Zuzana Prochazka, Miami Innovation Awards chair, member of the BWI Board of Directors and staff writer for Latitudes and Attitudes; Charles J. Doane, editor-at-large for Sail; Alan Jones, executive editor of Boating World; Jan Mundy, co-founder and editor of DIY Boat Owner; Lenny Rudow, author and freelance writer for Marlin, Salt Water Sportsman, Boating World and Chesapeake Bay Magazine; Tim Queeney, editor of Ocean Navigator; and, Alan Wendt, editor of Marine CEO and Adventures.

“We had an exceptional bank of entries this year, with a total of 41 products entered in eight categories,” says Prochazka. With regard to the DSe, she says, “This is a boat for those who want to be self-sufficient on the hook for extended periods, while staying ‘green’ and keeping all the on board toys.” All judges found the DSe to be a positive step for the boating industry and alternative energy propulsion systems with its Steyr hybrid engines and vast solar array.

As the experts have recognized, the new DSe Hybrid fulfills the active boater’s dream of cruising long distances and will help get people on the water in a fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly way.

Mobile, AL—Real Ships, the custom steel boatbuilder in Alabama, is pleased to now offer its American-made yachts to the European cruising market. Aventura, a 77-foot Expedition produced by Joe Johnson’s Real Ships, debuted at the October Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show and instantly caught the attention of Heikki Luoma, owner of Compass International.

Luoma’s Palma de Mallorca-based dealership in Spain will now provide exclusive European representation for Real Ships yachts. Luoma says, “Real Ships will have a competitive edge over other steel yachts in Europe because of the customization of each yacht for each individual owner. They also have a deep understanding of how an expedition type yacht really should be built and equipped for seaworthiness and reliability when the going gets tough, as it always will.” He believes European cruisers will be as impressed as he was which was evidenced by the strong interest in Real Ships by select consumers at the recent Dusseldorf show.

Compass International has been offering brokerage, mooring, charter, and yacht delivery services in Palma de Mallorca since 1986 and specializes in brokerage of expedition cruising and research vessels as well as conversion projects. Representing new custom Real Ships yachts will be an ideal balance to the existing inventory and allows Luoma to bring his yachting and dealer expertise to cruisers seeking quality long-range yachts.

He has been boating since age 25 and sailed professionally prior to beginning Compass International. Luoma holds a Finnish Captain’s license under which he has logged 60,0000nm. The majority of his time at the helm has been aboard steel and aluminum sailing yachts and includes four Atlantic crossings, once singlehandedly. His experience being at sea aboard metal yachts is an ideal blend with Real Ships’ belief that steel is the ultimate material in hull construction.

Compass International will provide the same Real Ships custom experience to each client as they determine how they will use their yacht, what range is necessary to meet their cruising goals, and what the accommodation, styling, and design details should include. The Real Ships team in Alabama will then work with all the client specifications to build the yacht accordingly. Owners will have the option of taking delivery in Alabama and setting off for their voyage or using a yacht delivery service to transport their vessel to Europe or other cruising grounds. European customers of Compass International will also have the benefit of the company’s relationship with a host of Mediterranean companies for service, repair, engineering, and painting in addition to their moorage and yacht delivery services.

Johnson looks forward to expanding the Real Ships presence across international waters through the dealer services of Compass International and sees this as a “positive relationship that supports the long-range cruising mission of Real Ships yachts.”

Sarasota, FL—It’s not often that one event can bring together sailboats, powerboats, and the opportunity to give back to the community. In the case of the 8th Annual Invitational Regatta that was hosted by the Sarasota Yacht Club Nov. 6-8, there was a special joining of forces among the more than 60 boats that participated in the 12-mile Gulf race; Kadey-Krogen Yachts, the title sponsor; and the very deserving beneficiary of the Regatta’s proceeds, The Wellness Community of Southwest Florida.

Kadey-Krogen first became involved with recognizing the efforts of The Wellness Community (TWC) in January of this year when Charlie Ann Syprett, an active Krogen owner, member of the Sarasota Yacht Club, and board member of TWC, began “Kruisin’ for a Kause.” Kruisin’ for a Kause is an opportunity for Krogen and other trawler owners to take Wellness Community-approved cancer patients out on the water for a day of relaxation and escape from the stresses of cancer and treatment programs. Kadey-Krogen Yachts welcomed the opportunity to sponsor Kruisin’ for a Kause because they believe in the serenity that boating offers and the opportunity that everyone should have to enjoy that feeling.

Through the endless energy and passion of Charlie Ann Syprett and support of the Sarasota Yacht Club, this is the first year the Invitational Regatta had fundraising efforts in support of a beneficiary. It was a natural fit for Kadey-Krogen to sponsor the first-ever Docktails kick-off party and weekend event. Larry Polster, Kadey-Krogen’s vice president says, “Sponsoring these types of events is a way for our company to not only give back to the cruising community but also celebrate life. These events underscore our philosophy that the things you regret are the things you didn’t do, so it’s important to get out there and experience cruising while you can.”

Participants as well as the general public attended Friday evening’s Docktails where they were surrounded by theme-inspired docks with festively decorated boats. With 24 boats decked out to represent Pirate, Margaretville, and Mardi Gras themes, the evening was guaranteed to be entertaining. Docktails also included specialty drinks, a robust buffet, and tropical live music that raised an overwhelming $30,000 all benefiting The Wellness Community SWFL. (For information on the Invitational Regatta, visit www.sarasotayachtclub.org or www.wellness-swfl.org.)

The main event was Saturday, November 8th and race boats were cheered on by a group of powerboats led by the Syprett’s 58-foot Krogen, Blue Heaven. This “Ring of Power” included 21 powerboats and hosted VIPs of the event including John Gear from Kadey-Krogen as well as 11 Kruisin’ for a Kause cancer participants. Kadey-Krogen Yachts is proud to have collaborated with the Sarasota Yacht Club in supporting The Wellness Community SWFL and their efforts, who since 1996 have been providing support, education, and hope to more than 8,500 people in the Sarasota area who have been affected by cancer. The weekend was filled with a good breeze and boating for a good cause and Kadey-Krogen congratulates all who participated!

Annapolis, MD — Selene Annapolis and Selene Florida are pleased to invite you to the East Coast debut of the Selene 62, Oct. 30-Nov. 3 at the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show, slip B240.

Jet-Tern Marine, the parent company of Selene is headed by Howard Chen, a renowned naval architect, who with his design team offers Selene trawlers from 36 to 75 feet.

The interior of the 62 was designed by the internationally recognized designer Ken Freivokh, who specified quality teak, cherry, and fine granites for flooring, cabinetry, countertops, and interior details which are all complimented by beautiful fabrics. With Selene’s semi-custom trawlers, owners have some choices to make in the design of their boat. There is flexibility in interior layouts and owners can choose from a galley up or down configuration, optional crew quarters, and can choose between single or twin engines.

The 62 you will see in Ft. Lauderdale has a galley up configuration which allows for a large open saloon with separate dining table. A few steps up to the pilothouse bring you to the control station with owner-selected Furuno electronics, all-around visibility, and comfortable seating options for guests. There is a dedicated stairway from the pilothouse up to the flybridge which can also be accessed via a lovely curving stairway from the cockpit.

On the bridge, you will find a redundant helm station, two custom Selene helm chairs, and a settee around a large flybridge table which can be protected by an optional hardtop. The deck extends aft over the cockpit to accommodate a crane, a large dinghy, and owners’ toys.

Belowdecks, the luxurious layout includes three staterooms each with an en suite head. Owners enjoy a full beam master stateroom complete with a walk around king-size bed, writing desk, vanity, and full height wardrobes. The stateroom areas are well separated from the walk-in engine room by a full beam bulkhead and three-inch Soundown insulation. Engine room access is through a stairway down from the cockpit or saloon and is adjacent to the crew quarters, if selected. Two FRP fuel tanks provide a total fuel capacity of 2,600 U.S. gallons giving her a range of approximately 2,000 miles at 8-1/2 knots. The well-equipped engine room on this 62 also houses a 32 and 20 kW generator, ESI fuel polishing system, two sub-zero freezers, and provisions for diving equipment.

The 62 is the newest addition to the East Coast fleet of Selene trawlers and represents the range of semi-custom options Selene owners have. Come aboard at slip B240 and see how the Selene 62 provides the ultimate in range and comfort at sea.

Chantilly, VA—ESI Total Fuel Management introduced and has been producing complete fuel polishing and transfer systems for the marine and critical power industries since 1995 and continues to be a leader in this field. They are pleased to be introducing their newest marine system, the Fuel Management System 2000, at the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show, Oct. 30-Nov. 3. Come aboard the Real Ships 77, slip F-614, to see the unit and its components installed and talk with ESI representatives about this innovative system for any on board fuel application.

The new system was specified by Joe Johnson, owner of Real Ships, because it not only fits the design and operation objectives of his new 77 expedition yacht, but it also offers a complete fuel management system. The comprehensive and meticulously engineered unit offers fuel transferring between tanks, fuel polishing with a flow rate of 600 gallons per hour, and innovative monitoring technology all in one system. The monitoring and control functionality of the Fuel Management System 2000 is all micro-processor driven, self-monitoring, and offers owners a fail-safe operation because of its multiple levels of redundancy and built-in self-monitoring technology. For example, an owner will never overfill tanks again because of the system’s ability to monitor tank levels; the knowledge that an owner will never cause extra fuel to run off into the water also makes this a product that promotes greener boating and cleaner marinas.

ESI’s business goals of ensuring safer and more reliable boating are inherent in their new Fuel Management System 2000. On the Real Ships 77, an owner can monitor and control system functions on the touch-screen display from either the bridge or the utility room display. All data is shown on a touch-screen interface which is typically installed at the bridge and in the engine room, but can be installed in alternate locations depending on owner preferences. The control system can also be integrated into an existing screen display.

The new series is rated for vessels with a total fuel capacity ranging from 2,500 to 100,000 U.S. gallons. ESI technical experts work directly with a builder to ensure successful and accurate installation and are available during sea trials and system checks to provide any troubleshooting or operation assistance necessary. The sophisticated design of the Fuel Management System 2000 assures that an owner can have clean and reliable fuel without having to delve into the technical nature of the system. Though the system can be retrofit to an existing engine room layout, most owners and builders prefer to have it installed during a vessel’s initial construction.

Join representatives of ESI Total Fuel Management at the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show on the Real Ships 77, slip F-614, and spend time with the experts in fuel management.

Annapolis, MD — Selene Annapolis Yachts is pleased to announce that John R. Dennison has joined their staff based in Annapolis, Maryland and serves in a multi-faceted role including sales, marketing, brokerage, project management, and consulting to Selene Annapolis customers and prospects.

He joined the team in June and has spent the last three months becoming familiar with the Selene Annapolis ownership process and stepping up the firm’s nascent brokerage business. His more than 30 years of experience in the yachting industry make him to ideal represent the cruising lifestyle to existing and future Selene customers. In addition to serving as a member of the sales and marketing team of Selene Annapolis, he will be involved in some of the activities relating to commissioning and after-market support.

He has captained private yachts, both power and sail, ranging to 125 feet and was also captain of a 148-foot oceanographic research vessel for a year which he ran from West Africa to the US. In 1983 he skippered Alan Bond’s Southern Cross II during the 1983 America’s Cup summer. Included in his impressive resume are more than 100 trips between New England, South Florida, and the Caribbean in the capacities of captain and instructor. His hands-on experience as a boater allows him to relate to those new to cruising as well as those looking to transition from different types of boats into a Selene.

As owner of Lone Star Marine Services, based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for over 18 years, he developed an intimate knowledge of yachts of all sizes. He has overseen major refits on yachts up to 125 feet, both power and sail, which gives him a strong foundation for being involved with the project management components of new Selene yachts.

Before joining Selene Annapolis, John spent over three years as a broker for Little Harbor Yacht Brokers in Fort Lauderdale where he was consistently successful. He holds a Florida Broker’s License, a necessity when conducting brokerage sales in Florida. Prior to Little Harbor Yacht Brokers, he spent 5 years working for Ted Hood’s Portsmouth Marine in Rhode Island as Service and Production Manager for the Selene line, making numerous trips to China where Jet Tern Marine, builder of these offshore trawlers, is located. His responsibilities included production management and quality control. “The fact that John has a previous intimate knowledge of the way Selenes are built, means he is well versed in the quality of Selene trawlers and can bring to new owners an understanding of how the boats are built,” says Chuck Wistar, principal of Selene Annapolis. “We are also fortunate to be gaining someone who is already familiar with Jet Tern’s production process.”

John’s practical knowledge and years of hands-on experience put him in a unique position to assist Selene owners, customers, and prospects whether they are inclined toward new or brokerage yachts. He is based at the company’s headquarters in Annapolis, MD. We invite you to meet the newest member of the Selene team at this fall’s boat shows. To contact John directly, send an email to john@seleneannapolis.com or call him at 410.280.0006.
